72 The small number = how many of that digit are still left to place. Highlighted cells belong to a diagonal.

Tips for Diagonal Sudoku

  • Check both diagonals first. They're marked on the board — a digit placed on one cannot repeat anywhere else on that same diagonal.
  • Diagonal cells resolve faster. The extra constraint often turns a diagonal cell into a naked single before the rest of the board catches up.
  • Everything else is standard Sudoku. Away from the diagonals, solve with the same row/column/box logic you already know.
  • Re-scan after every move. A new placement can complete a diagonal elsewhere on the grid — check both diagonals again before moving on.

What is Diagonal Sudoku?

Diagonal Sudoku, often called X-Sudoku, is one of the gentlest Sudoku variants to learn: it keeps every rule of classic 9×9 Sudoku and adds exactly one more. Alongside each row, column and 3×3 box, both main diagonals — top-left to bottom-right, and top-right to bottom-left — must also contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once.

How solving changes

Every Diagonal Sudoku puzzle on this page is freshly generated and checked to have exactly one valid solution under both the classic rules and the diagonal rule — never a guess required.
