72 The small number = how many of that digit are still left to place. Each shaded region takes the place of a 3×3 box.

Tips for Jigsaw Sudoku

  • Trace the regions first. They're shaded on the board so you can see the boundaries. A digit placed in one cannot repeat anywhere else in that same region, even where it bends around a corner.
  • Rows and columns still work as normal. Away from the region shapes, solve with the same naked-single and hidden-single logic you already know.
  • Odd shapes create extra eliminations. A region that stretches into a neighboring row or column often lets you cross off candidates a plain 3×3 box wouldn't.
  • Re-scan after every move. A new placement can complete a region elsewhere on the grid, especially in oddly shaped ones, so check again before moving on.

What is Jigsaw Sudoku?

Jigsaw Sudoku, also known as Irregular Sudoku or Squiggly Sudoku, keeps the row and column rules of classic 9×9 Sudoku but throws out the neat 3×3 boxes. In their place are nine irregular regions, each still made of exactly 9 cells, but shaped however the puzzle generator decides: some hook around a corner, some run in an L or a zigzag. Every row, column and region must still contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once.

How solving changes

Frequently asked questions

Jigsaw Sudoku is a Sudoku variant where the nine 3x3 boxes are replaced by nine irregular shaped regions of nine cells each. Rows and columns work exactly as in classic Sudoku, and every row, column and region must contain the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. It also goes by the names Irregular Sudoku and Squiggly Sudoku.

It feels different rather than strictly harder. You lose the familiar 3x3 box patterns, which takes some getting used to, but the odd region shapes create eliminations classic Sudoku never gives you. A region that snakes across four rows restricts all four of them at once. The puzzles on this page sit at a comfortable middle difficulty, so they are a fair introduction to the variant.

Only the regions change. The 9x9 grid, the digits and the row and column rules are identical to classic Sudoku. Instead of nine square boxes, the grid is divided into nine irregular regions, each shaded on the board so you can see its boundaries at a glance.

The irregular regions interlock like jigsaw puzzle pieces, which is where the name comes from. The same variant is sold in books and newspapers as Irregular Sudoku, Squiggly Sudoku, Nonomino Sudoku or Geometric Sudoku. They all follow the same rules.

Yes. Every puzzle on this page is generated fresh when the page loads, and a verification step confirms it has exactly one valid solution before you see it. No guessing is ever required.

Naked singles, hidden singles and pairs all work exactly as they do in classic Sudoku. The technique to add is region and line interaction: when all of a digit's possible cells within a region fall on one row or column, that digit can be removed from the rest of that row or column. Because the regions have odd shapes, this comes up far more often than the box version does in classic Sudoku.
